An Introduction to Colts Rugby
For the uninitiated ‘Colts’ is the sports recognised term for the 16 to 18 year old age group of the game and it is the boys first tentative steps into senior rugby after progressing through the ranks of the mini and youth teams. Colts rugby is regarded as a stepping stone where the boys are trained and coached to develop the skills required to enable them to progress further into 2nd or 1st team rugby. For a few of the luckier ones it also acts as a platform to get themselves noticed and go on to greater achievement and play representative rugby with their district side or even at a national level for Scotland.
As it is a 16 to 18 year old age group, rather than the single year of the younger squads, the team revolves around a 2 year rolling cycle. When the older boys move on you have an influx of new blood coming up from under 16 level, but there is always a core of players left to maintain the consistency of development.
The 2007/2008 Colts squad is predominantly a second year team as we only lost 9 players from last years squad , who were 3rd in their league and qualified for the Tri-district play-offs. They are joined by last years under 16’s who had a successful season , coming third in the Edinburgh league and winning the Edinburgh Cup. The outlook for this season is once again very good with the team having the potential to qualify for the National play-offs.
It is all change this year as the format reverts to a two division set up as two new teams , Lasswade and Preston Lodge , have swelled the ranks making fourteen teams in total. There will be seven teams in each division playing a home and away fixture. Currie Colts will be playing in the Edinburgh and District under 18 League Division One. The Edinburgh league runs from the beginning of September through until the end of November when the winners and runners up will progress to the National play-offs in December. After the Christmas and New Year break and the Representative games in January the Colts are back into action at the beginning of February with entry into a combined Edinburgh / Borders league for the remainder of the season.
Let's hope the Colts can maintain their winning traditions and bring some well earned silverware back to the Club to follow in the footsteps of the first fifteen, which would indeed be a testament to the commitment, effort and enthusiasm by the players, coaches and managers involved with the Colts at Currie Rugby Club.
